Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between a typical aesthetician and a medical aesthetician?
Well, probably you get it just by the name. Medical aestheticians work in the medical field, mostly in the offices of physicians, in surgical hospitals and even in outpatient care clinics, while normal estheticians work in salons, spas and other personal care type of settings.
Medical estheticians work in quite a similar manner as normal aestheticians in that they administer aesthetic procedures, mainly facial treatments, to enhance the appearance of the client. Medical aestheticians, however, deal mostly with postoperative patients, such as the ones who have just undergone a plastic surgery operation, those who had an operation because of an accident, and those who are undergoing chemotherapy. Their task is to help these patients maintain a good appearance and boost their self-esteem.
Medical estheticians deal mainly with beautifying facial skin, and also advise patients on what to do to maintain a good-looking skin or bring back the looks they had before to a certain extent. They know a lot about make-up application, especially in regards to doing it among those with a challenging case.
They may, for instance, help a patient who lost her hair or eyebrows to make her more presentable. They know enough about the whole process, which includes the right choice of colors, techniques and proportions.
Many medical estheticians are employed in plastic surgery clinics, and they are trained in such procedures as microdermabrasion and laser treatments.
If you want to become a medical aesthetician, you will need to complete a medical aesthetics course, which is a more advanced course than the typical cosmetology training program. You will also need to get a state license. Just make sure that you get into the right school for you, one that is both accessible where you live and licensed by the state.
